Questions to Answer Before Removing Carpet From Stairs
Count the steps, identify the installation and decide what finish should remain before anyone pulls the first edge.

A staircase estimate needs more than the number of floors. Count treads and risers, then note winders, turns, landings and carpeted edges. Photograph the top and bottom transitions.
Identify the carpet style
A narrow runner exposes both sides of the tread. Wall-to-wall stair carpet covers the full width. Waterfall and cap-and-band installations wrap edges differently and may use different fastener patterns.
Decide what the finished stair should become
If the stairs will receive new carpet, the installer may want usable tack strips kept. If the wood will be exposed, staple holes, adhesive, paint lines and unfinished edges may require repair or refinishing after removal.
Keep the stair out of service
Plan another path for residents and pets. The work zone may contain exposed tacks, tools and loose material even when the crew is careful.
